Speed demon nicked

by isleofman.com 2nd April 2007
A biker who was clocked at twice the speed limit on Mad Sunday last year had a button which hid his licence plate number, a court has heard.

But Lee David Hall had his conviction for dangerous driving quashed despite the fact he was doing 135mph in a 60mph zone.

Deemsters Kerruish and Doyle said simple speed wasn’t enough to prove he’d been riding his bike dangerously.

Mr Hall was caught on the Mountain Road travelling from Kate’s Cottage towards the Creg-ny-Baa.

In court last year, Mr Hall pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was banned for a year and fined a thousand pounds.

But in his appeal, Mr Hall claimed he’d only admitted the offence on the advice of the duty advocate who’d told him he could expect a minimal ban and a reasonable fine.

At the appeal before Deemsters Kerruish and Doyle, he denied having a flip plate and said he hadn’t been driving dangerously, simply too fast.

The Deemsters said speed on its own didn’t constitute dangerous driving and overturned his conviction and sentence.
