Oake memorial damaged

by isleofman.com 29th March 2007
A memorial for murdered police officer Stephen Oake has been vandalised.

The marble plaque, outside the flat in Manchester where the 40-year-old detective constable was stabbed to death, was broken and thrown at police cars.

Detective Constable Oake, son of former Chief Constable of the Isle of Man, Robin Oake, was stabbed to death during an anti-terrorism raid in 2003.

Greater Manchester Police say the vandalism is "despicable" and shows "a total lack of respect".

The damaged memorial has now been removed out of respect for DC Oake's family. It will be replaced when it has been repaired.

More than 8,000 people recently backed a campaign to posthumously award DC Oake the George Cross.
