Lenten lunches

by isleofman.com 27th March 2007
It’s a period when many members of the public stoically turn down offers of a pint, a Mars bar, a cigarette or indeed anything in an annual struggle with temptation.

The 40-day period of Lent which Christian tradition says Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before beginning the ministry which led to his crucifixion.

However, you don't have to be a Christian to benefit from Lenten sacrifices.

A number of Lenten lunches are taking place weekly throughout the Island including every Thursday at Cooil Hall.

Organised by members of the congregation at Braddan Church (pictured) and other churches in the area, one of the organisers Margaret Newton, says they’re growing in popularity:

The Lenten lunches at the Cooil Hall take place between 12 noon and 2 o’clock on Thursday.
