Planning approved on Derby Square

by isleofman.com 26th March 2007
A planning committee decision to allow a block of eight apartments to be built in Derby Square in Douglas has been upheld by Environment Minister John Shimmin.

Hartford Homes had applied to redevelop the Derby Square Garage, creating the flats and car parking.

But local objectors appealed to DLGE, claiming the design wouldn’t fit in with the Windsor Road conservation area.

They also said if the development were to be given the green light, property values would fall dramatically:

Hartford Homes said the existing garage had no architectural value and the apartments would be an improvement for the site.

The scheme, the company argued, would be sympathetic to the area and in keeping with other properties.

Planning Inspector David Hollis he was satisfied the building would preserve the character of that part of the conservation area.

He recommended the appeal be turned down and the original decision to allow the development be upheld.
