Tynwald approves ?5.5m IT programme

by isleofman.com 21st March 2007
A ?5.5 million scheme to improve health and social care for patients has been unanimously approved by Tynwald.

The Community Care Support System IT Programme will ensure when Manx patients receive treatment off-Island, systems in the Island are compatible with UK equivalents so key health and social care information can be exchanged and the best possible care received.

When fully operational, it will embrace hospital, primary care and social services activities.

Existing information systems at Noble's hospital are now outdated and no longer meet the necessary standards.

During a brief debate, former Health Minister, Clare Christian, told the court, she felt it unwise for patients to be allowed to opt-out of the system.

She said it could cause delay, create a parallel system of paper and defeat the object of CCSS.

East Douglas member Brenda Cannell sought re-assurance a hard copy of data would be kept in the event of computer failure or loss of power.
