Woman ends hunger strike

by isleofman.com 5th March 2007
It is reported a Douglas woman has ended her hunger strike after 38 days.

Kathryn Nelson has spent the past five and a half weeks refusing to eat until the Irish government cleared her name of money-laundering allegations

Mrs Nelson, a 57 year old Diplomatic Liaison Officer, was in Bulgaria when she got caught up in alleged IRA money laundering plots.

She vowed to continue her protest as long as necessary until a statement was issued declaring her innocence.

Her plight was the feature of a BBC Northern Ireland television programme last week.

Medical experts say the length of time a person can stop eating before dying of starvation is around 60 days.

Mrs Nelson is currently at home, although she did spend a brief period of time in Noble’s Hospital a fortnight ago.
