LegCo elections 'farcical'

by isleofman.com 5th March 2007
A political pressure group has described the failure to fill vacant seats on the legislative council as 'farcical'.

In a statement, the Celtic League says the situation is exposing all that is 'rotten' in Manx politics.

On March the 13th, MHK's will vote a fourth time to fill the remaining seat in the Upper Chamber. They will choose from former Laxey Commissioner, David Owens, former MLC Leonard Singer and Ramsey commissioner Richard Radcliffe.

All three candidates, and Peel Comissioner John Lightfoot, failed to gain the number of votes required last Tuesday.

The League says it is hopeful the debacle may bring about constitutional reform, whereby the Legislative Council would be popularly election.
