Head Lice - change in policy

The DHSS is explaining a change in policy in relation to the treatment of head lice among children in the Island's schools.

The department is now following guidelines laid down at a conference in England, under which 'alert letters' are no longer sent to parents.

Instead emphasis is being placed on the importance of providing the right information to deal with the problem, with the production of widely available leaflets and booklets on the subject.

Acting Director of PublicHealth, Dr Kishore, (pictured right) says at any time between 2% and 5% of children in a school will be infected, and issuing 'alerts' can be counter-productive:
