Scottish skipper catches hefty fine

The Fisheries Minister says the Isle of Man government has to take a hardline stance on illegal fishing in order to maintain a sustainable industry.

Phil Gawne's comments came after the skipper of a Scottish fishing vessel was fined ?1000 with ?150 costs by the High Bailiff at a special court in Douglas last week.

Undersized scallops were discovered in the St Keverne's hold, when she was boarded by Isle of Man Sea Fishery Officers, just a week after the boat's skipper had been given a verbal warning about the size of his catch.

Mr Gawne says the skipper's prosecution and fine show offences of this nature are taken very seriously:
