Seacat collides in Mersey

by isleofman.com 3rd February 2007
The Isle of Man Steam Packet fast craft, Sea Express I has been badly damaged after a collision in the Mersey involving the 14,000 ton bulk carrier, Alaskan Rainbow (pictured, centre).

The fastcraft (pictured, left, in Douglas harbour), with 218 passengers and 20 crew, was in the entrance to the Alfred Dock when the collision happened.

There were no injuries but the vessel sustained major damaged to its stern.

Tugs brought the vessel, listing heavily to the rear, into its berth and passengers were disembarked. However, because of the damage, it has not been possible to take the vehicles off.

Steam Packet Managing Director, Hamish Ross says he is greatly relieved there were no injuries and says there will be an official investigation (first audio clip).

Passenger Mark Simpson was on board and spoke to Manx Radio moments after the collision (second audio clip).

Passengers due to return on the Sea Express this evening will be transferred to the Ben My Chree from Heysham.
