Technetium 99 monitoring

by isleofman.com 30th January 2007
The International Atomic Energy Authority has said it would be prepared to assist in monitoring levels of Technetium 99 in the Irish Sea if it was asked to do so.

The IAEA was responding to a query from the Celtic League which has expressed concern over fluctuating levels of the pollutant which comes from the Sellafield reprocessing plant (pictured).

The Authority has carried out a joint venture in the past with the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, and whilst that was not aimed at monitoring technetium, it has told the League it would respond to any approach for assistance from member states.

Technetium 99 levels increased in 2005 although the level had been falling since 1998.
