Top freshwater quality

The quality of the Island's rivers is better on average than those in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

99% rate as at least 'fair' in terms of biological quality and general chemical quality.

The majority of rivers have improved over the last five years, but the Department of Local Government and the Environment says whilst the water courses are in a good condition overall, vigilance is always required to protect them.

The figures are contained in a new report covering river surveys from 2000 to 2005

Fresh Water Biologist from the Government Laboratory, Dr Calum MacNeil (pictured), says the Island's rivers are some of the best he's ever seen:
