Tagging basking sharks

by isleofman.com 10th January 2007
The Manx Basking Shark Watch are embarking on a exciting project to tag up to ten of the animals so they can be tracked by satellite.

The trust, in conjunction with the Manx Wildlife Trust, wants to know more about the behaviour, movement and numbers of the sharks which are seen by hundreds of people every summer in Manx coastal waters.

The information will also be fed into the joint nature conservation committee and European basking shark schemes

The satellite tags, which cost ?3,000 each, will be attached to the dorsal fin of the animals.

The project is being raised by sponsorship from a variety of private and corporate sources, including The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Jackie Hall, co-ordinator of Basking Shark Watch, says those sponsoring tags are also naming" their shark:

Anyone interested in sponsoring a tag for the other five sharks should contact Duncan Bridges or Jackie Hall at the Manx Wildlife Trust on 801 985
