Dangerous dogs legislation

by isleofman.com 10th January 2007
The Department of Local Government and the Environment is reassuring the Manx public over the Island's Dangerous Dogs legislation.

The move comes after the recent death of a young girl on Merseyside, who was savaged by her uncle's dog.

In the aftermath there was discussion over whose responsibility the attack was, which was determined by whether the dog was of a breed on the UK's dangerous dogs list.

Such debate would not be an issue on the Island

DOLGE says the Island's 1990 Dogs Act differs from current UK legislation as it contains no list of specific species of dog.

To date the act has been considered adequate by the Department's Dog Warden and the Isle of Man police, for dealing with canine problems, dangerous or otherwise.

DOLGE Minister John Shimmin says they've recognised for many years all dogs have the potential to be dangerous, and the Island's legislation has the means to deal with them.
