Heart problem caused student death

by isleofman.com 4th January 2007
The father of a Ramsey Grammar School pupil who died suddenly on Christmas Day says he was a victim of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome, or SADS. Dr David Ashton says 17 year old Luke was apparently perfectly well before succumbing to SADS, which is caused by a lethal and entirely unpredictable disturbance in heart rhythm. Dr Ashton, a consultant physician in Birmingham, says Luke suddenly lost consciousness while watching television, at a friend's house in Ballaugh. He says valiant attempts were made to rescucitate him, but he died at the scene, of natural causes. Luke moved to the Isle of Man with his mother, Kerry, and brother in 1996, having spent his early years in Stratford-upon-Avon. Kerry is a district nurse in the Island. Dr Ashton says Luke was a 'wonderful son' and there are no words to describe what his loss means to his family and all those who knew and loved him. He says he is irreplaceable. The funeral service will be at the Borough Crematorium in Douglas early next week.
