Winter Vomiting Virus hits hospital

by isleofman.com 28th December 2006
A ward at Noble's Hospital has been closed because of an outbreak of the winter vomiting virus.

It's the second time this year the illness has spread to patients and staff forcing admissions to be restricted as a matter of precaution.

Beth Espey reports:

The virus is characterised by vomiting and diarrhoea and has been spreading across the Island. The cases in the hospital have been confined to one ward and restrictions have been placed on visitors to protect them, the patients and staff.

Three wards were closed to admissions in October for the same reason.

If you have vomiting and/or diarrhoea, the advice is not to return to work for 48 hours after you have completely recovered. Often the Norovirus is spread by people who don't realise they are still infectious.

Hygiene precautions should also be followed at home. The symptoms should subside in two to three days.

Sufferers are also asked not to visit either the hospital or old people's homes.
