Work permit system to be reviewed

by isleofman.com 24th December 2006
The new Minister for Trade and Industry has commissioned an independent review of the Isle of Man's work permit system, and its administration.

It will be carried out by the Chief Officer at the Office of Fair Trading, and David Cretney says the aim will be to ensure it works to the benefit of the Island's economy and Manx workers.

Views will be sought from members of Tynwald, representatives of employers and employees and other interested parties, and a report will be presented to Mr Cretney early in the new year.

Graham Bell reports (audio file attached):

Mr Cretney (pictured) says it is important everybody understands the work permit system is in place to control employment and is not there to control residence, immigration or access to public services and benefits.

The Minister says the government needs to carry out a more rigorous and wide-range review to ensure integrated policies are in place that address current concerns.

Mr Cretney says there are concerns that work permits are too readily obtainable for certain jobs, when suitably skilled Isle of Man workers are available.

Also there is a feeling non-Isle of Man workers can use their permits to gain access to public services and benefits.
