Planning refused for Port Erin apartments

by isleofman.com 14th December 2006
A company has been told it can’t build two new blocks of apartments in Port Erin because the development would tower over other buildings.

Salamander (Perwick Bay) Ltd was told its appeal against the planning committee’s refusal had failed.

It had planned to demolish the Imperial Hotel (pictured) and build a total of 21 flats with parking spaces.

The nearby Erin Court management company claimed the proposal would be too close to other buildings and dwarf the rest of the Promenade.

Planning inspector David Ward said the planned buildings wouldn’t overlook Erin Court and any windows facing that way would be obscure glazed.

He added that in his view the visual effect on the promenade wouldn’t be sufficient reason to turn down the plans.

However, DLGE minister John Rimington said he thought the building would be at least one story too high.

He turned down the appeal, and backed the planning committee’s decision not to grant permission.
