New Chief Minister elected

by isleofman.com 15th December 2006
Tony Brown is the new Chief Minister of the Isle of Man

He received 27 votes with five spoilt papers in a secret ballot in Tynwald this morning.

Only Liberal Vannin members Peter Karran and Bill Malarkey made their opposition known.

Mr Brown was the only person to stand for the top job in Manx politics after all three candidates failed to receive suficient support in the first round of voting earlier this month.

He was proposed by South Douglas MHK David Cretney and seconded by Middle MHK Martin Quayle.

Mr Brown has made it know he wants to see unity among his ministers.

His appointment means that the House of Keys will have to choose a new Speaker.

That's due to take place at 2.30 this afternoon.
