Guilty verdict in manslaughter case

by isleofman.com 5th December 2006
A director of a property company has been found guilty of the manslaughter of a Douglas man.

The verdict on 58 year old Lionel Barry Diamond was reached at Douglas courthouse this afternoon, after a two week trial.

Forty-six year old Mark Lawrence Doyle died in a blaze at a property, owned by Diamond's Renaissance Enterprises Ltd, in Demesne Road, Douglas in March 2004.

Detective Inspector Kevin Wilson expressed satisfaction with the verdict, saying it sent a firm signal to all landlords that they had a clear and unambiguous duty of care towards their tenants, particularly in terms of fire safety.

He said Diamond had such a duty of care towards Mark Doyle and in choosing to ignore it now has to face the consequences.
