Brown set to raise air passenger duty

by isleofman.com 4th December 2006
A further rise in air passenger duty may be announced this week by the United Kingdom Government.

It's believed Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown (pictured) may "flag up" the rise on Wednesday, to underline the "green credentials" of the Labour Government.

Business Editor John Moss reports (text of attached audio file):

The extra money would be used to combat global warming but also to discourage the increasing use of low fare airlines, one of whom, RyanAir is currently offering "free flights", charging just taxes.

Such an increase would hit locations like the Isle of Man particularly hard as the additional charge would be a significant "add on" to low cost, short haul flights.

It may be one of the early problems the next chief minister has to deal with, if Tynwald elects one in Tuesday's vote.

The three candidates are, in alphabetical order, David Cannan, Steve Rodan and John Shimmin.
