Life sentence to remain for Ramsey woman

by isleofman.com 30th November 2006
The High Court has ruled against imposing a minimum tarriff on a Ramsey woman, serving a life sentence for killing her boyfriend.

The sentence on Anne Marie Gosling has already been raised on appeal from four and a half years to life imprisonment.

Judges have ruled that Gosling - who killed Peter Ormiston in 2004 - had a personaility disorder which meant she continued to pose a serious risk of violence to herself and others.

Both the court and Gosling's legal team have agreed a minimum tarriff is not appropriate.

It would mean that if an application for parole during the term failed, no further application could be made for two years.

Instead, Gosling's release will be determined by her willingness to co operate with psychiatric treatment and her response to it - all of which is unknown at this stage.

Those responsible for that treatment will determine when a release is practical and appropriate for both her and the public. So setting a time frame would be inflexible and could mean she's released earlier - or later - than her condition dictates.

It's thought Gosling may eventually be transferred from a secure unit at Low Newton in County Durham, where she is serving her jail term, to an open prison.
