A 23 year old man has been jailed for three years by Deemster Doyle for an offence of rape.

Nicholas David Glover of Lezayre Road, Ramsey, admitted the offence which was committed on June 9th at a house in Ramsey.

The victim was a 19 year old woman.

Peter Carle, prosecuting, said the victim was asleep on a sofa in the house, when she awoke to find the defendant on top of her having sexual intercourse.

She told him to get off. Glover replied "sorry . . sorry". He was arrested later that day.

Mr Carle said at the time the defendant was under the influence of alcohol. He had known the girl for some weeks but knew that she had a boyfriend.

The defendant's advocate said the defendant had admitted the offence immediately and stressed there was no violence or threats used and there was no injury to either the victim or the defendant.

Deemster Doyle said rape was a very serious matter but all cases were dealt with on their merits. He noted the defendant's previous convictions, most of which were committed after he had been drinking.

He placed Glover on the sexual offences register for five years.
