Solway boss refuses inquest

by isleofman.com 21st November 2006
The man last year acquitted of the manslaughter of the seven crew of the Solway Harvester has refused to attend the inquest into the sinking.

Vessel owner South-west Scotland businessman Richard Gidney was this morning (Monday) named as the man behind the postponement of the hearing.

Coroner Michael Moyle revealed he does not have the jurisdictional authority to insist Mr Gidney attends.

But he urged him to reconsider his position within 14 days or action would be taken to obtain his evidence on commission.

After seeking legal advice, Mr Gidney is refusing to attend on the grounds it may prejudice any civil action by the families of the seven crewmen.
