Covert surveillance chief sought

by isleofman.com 14th November 2006
The Isle of Man will soon have its own intelligence watchdog, who'll have the task of keeping an eye on Big Brother.

The new Surveillance Commissioner post has been created by the Department of Home Affairs.

The position ties in with the Regulation of Surveillance Etc Bill which, subject to Royal Assent, will come into force in December.

Edward Oldham reports:

Home Affairs Minister, John Shimmin, says the bill will provide a framework for covert surveillance carried out by public authorities on the Island.

The Commissioner's main duties will involve checking surveillance authorisations and granting or quashing them as necessary.

He or she will also order the destruction of records and monitor the performance of those carrying out the work.

Mr Shimmin says having the commissioner will reassure the public any covert operations undertaken by authorities will be carried out properly.
