Unemployment figure rises

There were just over 600 people on the Island's unemployment register at the end of October, an increase of 33 on the previous month.

The figure, representing 1?% of the economically active population, is up 50 on this time last year and about 400 higher than in October 2002.

The number of people requiring permits before starting work has gone down from 40 to 33 in the past twelve months.

The Job Centre was told of nearly 650 vacancies during October and at the end of the month 313 positions were held on file.
