Prosecution apply for costs in Corkill trial

by isleofman.com 8th November 2006
An application for Julie Corkill, wife of former Chief Minister Richard Corkill, to pay the entire costs of her trial, will be considered later this month.

Yesterday, she was fined ?10,000 following her conviction of three charges of false accounting and one of obtaining money by deception.

The charges relate to grants paid by government towards development of holiday accommodation at the Corkill's Onchan home, Ballacain.

As well as making the costs application, the prosecution has lodged a compensation application for the repayment of one of two grants - worth ?47,122 - paid by the Department of Tourism and Leisure.

That matters will provisionally be determined on November the 24th.

Meanwhile, the Celtic League has welcomed the sentence imposed.

Director of Information, Bernard Moffatt (pictured) has also asked police to look closely at claims by former Onchan MHK Richard Corkill over his resignation.

A fortnight ago, he announced he wouldn’t be seeking re-election because of the 'safety and welfare' of his family.

Mr Moffatt says it's unprecedented for anyone to be forced from political life in the Island due to threats to their family:
