Fireworks safety advice

by isleofman.com 31st October 2006
The Department of Home Affairs is urging Isle of Man residents to stay safe this Bonfire Night.

The public are being advised to attend organised events, where all necessary precautions will be taken.

The Fire Service's Community Safety Officer, Carl Kinvig, says the service recommends people don't have a fire in their own gardens.

Edward Oldham reports:

Mr Kinvig says if people do decide to have their own bonfires, there are a number of guidelines they must follow.

They should ensure it's at least 18 metres away from any building, for example their house or garden shed, or hedge.

When lighting the fire they should use domestic firelighters, and not paraffin or petrol as this can lead to the fumes igniting and injuring spectators.

Anyone planning a bonfire should tell the Emergency Services Joint Control Room in advance on 697327, and are reminded to call 999 in an emergency.
