Jurby fight to continue

by isleofman.com 25th October 2006
Jurby School’s special needs unit may have been given a reprieve – but the long-term fight to secure its future is to continue.

That is according to a father who headed a legal challenge against the facility’s closure.

Although that challenge against the Department of Education was withdrawn last week and agreement reached to keep the unit open until next July, Fred Stokes hasn’t ruled out further action.

Mr Stokes, whose son Jamie is taught at the unit, says he understands the department has difficulties with staffing resources.

But he says there has to be a long-term transition period before children transfer to other suitable units – something he feels doesn’t exist at the moment.
