Fireworks safety

by isleofman.com 24th October 2006
The Office of Fair Trading, fire service and the police are working together again to promote Fireworks safety on the island.

This year's key message to young people is ' Be safe not sorry - always follow the code'

No one under the age of 18 should be able to purchase fireworks legally, posters are being issued to the secondary schools showing a young man with horrific injuries and the youth services are promoting the safety messages through its youth clubs.

In 2005 more than two hundred children aged 10 or under were injured by fireworks in the United Kingdom, most of which were caused by sparklers.

The advice is that children under the age of 5 should NOT be given sparklers.

The O.F.T is issuing all primary schools around the Island with posters and leaflets specifically aimed at younger children and their parents.

They are also reminding both retailers and consumers that fireworks cannot be supplied to, or sold by anyone under the age of 18.
