Manx want Sellafield safety guarantees

by isleofman.com 18th October 2006
The Government says it wants re-assurances from the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency on the safety of Sellafield.

John Rimington, the Environment Minister, says he fears that the Sellafield safety guarantees, issued by the UK Nuclear Installations, may prove ineffective in the event of privatisation.

This week British Nuclear Fuels, which runs Sellafield, was fined half a million pounds after a radioactive leak at the reprocessing plant which went unnoticed for months.

Mr Rimington says he wants to be told that should new management take over, "the very highest degree of safety will be maintained".
