Energy Officer job outline

by isleofman.com 17th October 2006
Tynwald has been told that if the appointment of an Manx Government Energy Officer is to work, the person given the job must be provided with the necessary powers, by the Council of Ministers.

Earlier today North Douglas MHK John Houghton told the Court substantial savings could be made in and around government departments, but only if the role was taken seriously:

Mr Houghon said the energy officer needed to be a ruthless disciplinarian:

Mr Houghton was one of five members of the Council of Ministers' Energy Committee, whose report was unanimously backed by Tynwald.

The committee looked at three main policy aims for the government, maintaining the security of energy supply, securing the efficient use of affordable energy and minimising the impact of the use of energy on the environment.

Among many other things it considered the provision of windmills to generate electricity on a seabank off the north east coast of the Island, or some other suitable location; harnessing the tidal currents around the Island to generate power; and ways in which the government could encourage people to use domestic windmills and solar panels.
