?500,000 fine for Sellafield leak

by isleofman.com 17th October 2006
The operator of Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria has been fined half a million pounds for allowing a radioactive leak to go unnoticed for eight months.

Carlisle Crown Court said the break in a pipe, which allowed 83,000 litres of liquid to leak out, "should have been noticed within days".

The acid involved contained 20 tonnes of uranium and 100 kilogrammes of plutonium was supposed to end up in a holding tank but dripped out of the pipe instead. No radiation escaped and no one was injured but the plant has been closed since then. BNFL had pleaded guilty to the charges.
