Castletown property could now be saved

by isleofman.com 12th October 2006
There are renewed hopes that a much-loved Castletown building can be saved and will now be renovated.

The fate of Number five, The Parade has been in the balance after its owners became embroiled in a dispute with the department of the environment.

The registered building fell into disrepair and a Select Committee of Tynwald was set up to examine options for the future.

Marian Kenny has been looking at the Committee's findings (text of attached audio file):

The mid-18th century house is the only one of its age and stature on the Island.

It's survival is doubly important as its adjoined to Balcony House, the former home of Captain John Quilliam.

DLGE stopped conversion work by owners Auctor Ltd in 2004, claiming unauthorised works had taken place.

The Tynwald committee has heard from interested parties across the board, including architects, planners, heritage groups and the local commissioners and emergency services.

Their report concludes the building is worthy of restoration .

And there are a series of recommendations on the sale and alteration of registered properties, making clear the responsibilities of the authorities and owners.
