Julie Corkill rubbishes deception claims

by isleofman.com 10th October 2006
Julie Corkill protested her innocence during intense questioning in court today.

She appeared in the witness stand in her own defence to deny four charges of false accounting and two of obtaining a total of ?90,000 in tourism grants by deception.

Under intense cross examination from prosecution advocate Stuart Neale, Mrs Corkill denied any wrongdoing.

She remained composed and calm during an hour and a half of questions from Mr Neale.

When asked whether she thought she could bulldoze her application through the DTL because of her husband’s position, she said she had never done that.

Mrs Corkill also said claims she had purposely set out to deceive the DTL over grants paid for the building of tourist accommodation were rubbish.

Prosecution Advocate Stuart Neale and Defence Advocate Dawn Jones are both expected to give their closing addresses tomorrow morning.

High Bailiff Michael Moyle has said there won't be an instant judgement.

His decision is expected in the next couple of weeks.

Mrs Corkill's husband, Richard, was the Isle of Man's Chief Minister at the time the offences were allegedly committed.
