Asylum seeker's lawyer disappointed

by isleofman.com 10th October 2006
An advocate who represented the Island's first asylum seeker says she's 'very disappointed' he lost his appeal.

Hazel Hammonds appeared for Bangladeshi chef Mohammed Ahmed, at a tribunal to decide whether he can stay in the United Kingdom.

He's now being ordered to return to his native country.

Mr Ahmed came to the Isle of Man illegally last year after being told by UK authorities he could apply for asylum here, but it was later ruled that wasn't the case.

He then sought asylum in the UK, which was refused, then refused again on appeal on Friday.

Mr Ahmed claims his life would be in danger in Bangladesh, because of his political beliefs.

Mrs Hammonds says it's unlikely there will be another appeal.

The tribunal refused to rule on establishing a formal procedure for dealing with any future cases where asylum seekers become known to the authorities in the Island.
