Wartime plane crash to be remembered

by isleofman.com 9th October 2006
A tragic incident in Laxey during the second world war will be remembered on Saturday afternoon.

On July 14, 1944 a Royal Canadian Airforce Halifax bomber was taking part in a training flight, when it caught fire.

The aeroplane crashed in fields behind Lonan church, killing all seven crew on board, and a three year old child died when a bungalow caught fire after an engine flew across the main road.

Wreckage fell on schoolchildren, on the MER line at Fairy Cottage and on the rocks of Laxey beach.

A memorial has been erected by members of the Laxey and Lonan branch of the Royal British Legion and at 2.00pm a dedication service will take place in Lonan church yard, close to where the aircraft fell.

Spokesman Fred Matthews says it’s important to remember those who lost their lives (audio file attached):
