Caught short in Port St Mary?

by isleofman.com 5th October 2006
Port St Mary Commissioners have been told they can’t site a public toilet next to their Town Hall because it would be a magnet for crime.

Their plan to convert an existing storehouse into toilets without altering the exterior of the building has been turned down at appeal.

The Manx police force’s Architectural Liaison Officer said the block would become a focus for criminal and anti-social behaviour.

Planning inspector David Hollis said he agreed and this would impact on nearby residents.

Jason Roberts reports:

The application would have seen commissioners create the block in the grounds of the Town Hall.

The local authority said it would close the toilets between 10pm and 8am each night and install CCTV.

But the planning inspector said he didn’t think this would deter those determined to congregate for anti-social behaviour.

He upheld the original decision of the planning committee to refuse the application and dismissed the appeal.
