Government restructure report

by isleofman.com 28th September 2006
Local government could be in for a shakeup if the latest report on restructuring government is approved by Tynwald.

Although it’s been published now, there won’t be a discussion on the 48 recommendations until after the November election.

The independent report into the government’s scope and structure says local government should be changed to create large local authorities.

These could then carry out a variety of tasks which currently fall to departments.

Jason Roberts reports:

The report says until local government can be reformed, the Island should have an executive agency taking over some responsibilities.

These would eventually be handed over to commissioners or councillors.

Under scrutiny are jobs such as public housing, building regulations, planning, environmental health, pest control, street cleaning, car parks, waste management and refuse disposal.

In the UK, local authorities already carry out some of these functions.
