Land girls to be honoured

by isleofman.com 26th September 2006
The Isle of Man will become the first place in the British Isles to honour its "Land Girls".

The Women's Land Army, as it was officially known, stepped in to replace male workers and boost food production during World War Two.

The Council of Ministers has agreed to the production of a commemorative medal for surviving members of the 200-strong Manx Women's Land Army.

Chief Minister Donald Gelling says the idea goes back several years, and it was time something was done. (clip 1)

It's hoped as many ex-MWLA ladies as possible can be identified before the medals are due to be presented at Government House in late November.

Former members of the organisation who are eligible for recognition are asked to contact Mrs Pauline Pescodd in the Chief Minister's Office on 685705.
