George gets another statue in Wigan

The statue of George Formby in Douglas is about to get a rival – in the comedy performer’s home town of Wigan.

Manx artist Amanda Barton has been commissioned by Wigan council to create a new sculpture which will be sited in the town and unveiled next May.

It means the Island will no longer be able to boast the only statue of George, although the new one won’t have the TT outfit boasted by the Ridgeway Street figure.

Amanda says it was our statue which inspired Wigan to ask her to create another:
