Shortfall in mental health service, says MHK

There are encouraging signs that mental health nurses needed in the Isle of Man could, in future, be trained here.

Official figures show that around 35 per cent of nurses currently working in the Mental Health Service will retire within the next five years.

The prospect of a shortfall from the year 2011 has been highlighted by Onchan MHK Peter Karran.

He's called on the DHSS to make funds available for the on-island training of psychiatric nurses - and a so-called "Gold" bid has been made by Social Services for this to begin in the next academic year.

He says many potential nurses would welcome the opportunity to train for a career here (audio file attached):
