MHK's concern over balance

by isleofman.com 20th September 2006
A member of the House of Keys has raised the issue of balance in the coverage of candidates in the run-up to the general election, on November 23.

In Tynwald next month West Douglas MHK Dominic Delaney will ask what steps are being taken to ensure that each member of Tynwald, and every other candidate contesting the election, has equal broadcasting time on Manx Radio, to allow them to comment on current affairs.

Manx Radio's management says it has every intention of conforming with the broadcasting rules laid down within the Programme Code.

However, the code says there is no expectation that the time devoted to all candidates in an election will be exactly equal.

It also states that, even following nomination day, in this case October 30, it is not necessary to secure the agreement of all candidates before any candidate can take part in an item about the relevant constituency.

Mr Delaney (pictured) doesn't mention election coverage on either of the Island's other radio stations, 3FM and Energy FM.
