Jailed for rounders bat offence

A 21 year old man who threatened a group of youths with a rounders bat has been jailed for 20 months by Deemster Doyle.

Daniel Brian Corlett, care of the prison, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on a 16 year old juvenile and possessing an offensive weapon.

Linda Watts, prosecuting, said the incident occurred during the evening of August 25 last year in Market Street, Douglas.

A group of young people were out in the town celebrating their exam results and drinking alcopops.

One thought he recognised the passenger in a Shogun car which was driving past and put his thumb up. The man got out and started shouting at the group.

He returned to the vehicle and came back to the group with a silver metal rounders bat. He started to wave it around and in doing so hit one of the group in the head, causing a cut to the 16 year old's head which required staples.

The court heard Corlett had several previous convictions for violence and Deemster Doyle told him that violence would not be tolerated.

His advocate claimed that Corlett was provoked and goaded by the group. He only attempted to scare the group with the bat and had no intention at all of hitting them.

He now accepted that his action was reckless.
