Drugs firm in legal battle

by isleofman.com 13th September 2006
A High Court battle has broken out in South Africa over generic Viagra which is alleged to have been sold by a Manx firm.Tokai-based BCC Pharmaceuticals was raided by police and the South African department of health, who seized computers and files as well as medicines. The company is now battling in the Cape high court to declare the seizure unlawful and have its goods returned. BCC Pharmaceuticals managing director, Stuart Bassett, said the company sells equipment and drugs to Africa and the Middle East, negotiating with manufacturers of generic medicine to deliver directly to the country concerned. Basset said that the generic version of the anti-impotence drug Viagra was a sample he’d received to send to the Isle of Man after he’s received an offer for the drug from India in 2002.However, he later discovered that his contact here in the Island had been dealing in counterfeit drugs. But the government says Basset isn’t allowed to import or export medicines without a licence and the medicines found haven’t been registered in South Africa. Justice Dennis Davis will give his judgment on September 22.
