Asylum issue addressed by Chief Minister

by isleofman.com 8th September 2006
Chief Minister, Donald Gelling, has been speaking about the Isle of Man's first asylum case, in the face of claims the issue is a grey area over here.

In a fortnight, a tribunal in Bradford will rule on whether 39 year old Mohammed Ahmed from Bangladesh can stay in Britain.

The Manx based advocate representing Mr Ahmed, Hazel Hammonds, says it is disappointing the hearing refused to consider the question of whether Britain or the Isle of Man should rule when foreign nationals seeking asylum arrive here.

But Mr Gelling says effective processes are already in place.
