Asylum seeker uncertainty remains

The authorities in the Isle of Man are facing uncertainty over what to do about asylum seeker cases.

It was hoped a tribunal yesterday on the Island's first asylum case would clear the matter up.

A tribunal reserved judgement on whether Mohammed Ahmed, who arrived here a year ago, should be sent back to Bangladesh or allowed to stay in Britain.

But the hearing in Bradford refused to consider the crucial issue of whether Britian or the Isle of Man should rule when foreign nationals seeking asylum arrive on Manx shores.

And that's left the Manx authorities none the wiser about what to do when similar cases
crop up in the future.

Hazel Hammonds, who represented Mr Ahmed at the tribunal, says it's a thorny issue which the politicans must grasp:
