International recognition for Curraghs

The Ballaugh Curragh wetlands are officially recognised today as an area of special scientific interest.

The award comes from the International Ramsar Organisation, the wetland equivalent of the World Heritage Organisation.

The site's new status is being confirmed at a ceremony at the Wild Life Park and Ramsar's Secretary General, Peter Bridgewater, will be there.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Phil Gawne, says it's an important move for the area (audio file attached):
