Last chance for asylum seeker

by isleofman.com 6th September 2006
It's a crucial day for a Bangladeshi national who is seen as the Isle of Man's first ever asylum seeker.

An appeal hearing in Bradford will determine whether 39 year old chef Mohammad Ahmed can stay in Britain or has to return to his native country.

Mr Ahmed says his life would be in danger if he was sent back to Bangladesh, because of his political beliefs.

Today's hearing will be in Bradford, and he will be represented by Isle of Man based solicitor-advocate Hazel Hammonds.

As well as presenting Mr Ahmed's case for being allowed to stay, she will ask the tribunal to comment on whether the Isle of Man or the United Kingdom should be responsible for what happens in such situations.

It's understood UK law could be adopted in the Island fairly quickly if it was decided the Manx authorities should take charge.

Human rights lawyer Paul Beckett (pictured), who has been representing Mr Ahmed, will be talking about the case on Mandate, after the 8:00 am news bulletin.
