Fire victims to be remembered

by isleofman.com 5th September 2006
A memorial service is to be held at the Summerland site in Douglas later this month, to mark the building's demolition and remember those who lost their lives in a fire there 30 years ago. The service is intended as an Act of Remembrance for the victims of the disaster, and will be presided over by the Lord Bishop, Graeme Knowles. Marian Kenny reports (text of attached audio file): Tourism and Leisure Minister David Cretney and the Lord Bishop are extending an open invitation to members of the public to attend the event at 2pm on Thursday, September 28. Fifty people lost their lives in a fire at the original Summerland building in 1973, and this service may be the last opportunity to remember the vicitims at the scene of the disaster. The service bears similarity with that held at Ground Zero in New York before re-development of the cleared site gets underway. Organisers say parking will be limited and suggest those who want to attend use public transport. Although the site surface is fairly even, sensible footwear is advised. Demolition of Summerland began in earnest last autumn - the project will cost around ?2 million - but the future of the site remains undecided. (Picture: The demolition of Summerland).
